Terms Of Service

Last updated November 01, 2025

Welcome to TipJar.nz (“TipJar”, “we”, “our”, or “us”). These Terms & Conditions (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of the TipJar platform, including our website, web app, payment links, QR codes, and any related services (“Services”).

By creating a Jar, accessing a PayLink/PayPage, or using TipJar in any way, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use TipJar.

1. What TipJar Is

TipJar provides a simple way for individuals, community groups, schools, and businesses in New Zealand to collect koha, tips, payments, or donations using QR codes and online payment methods.

TipJar is not a bank, financial institution, charity, or money remitter. We provide the software platform and user experience; payments are processed by our payment partners.

2. Payment Processing

Online payments on TipJar are processed securely by Stripe or other approved payment providers.

By enabling online payments, you agree to Stripe’s Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and any Connect or Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements.

You must provide accurate information for identity verification and payouts. Failure to complete verification may delay or prevent payouts.

3. Fees

TipJar has two modes:

A) Bank Transfer Only (no online payments)

  • Visitors see your bank account information and transfer funds manually.
  • 0% fees are charged by TipJar.
  • You are responsible for reconciling and confirming payments.

B) Online Payments Enabled

  • TipJar charges a standard fee of 4% after third-party processing fees are deducted.
  • Stripe currently charges 2.7% + $0.30 per transaction (subject to change by Stripe).
  • TipJar may update its fees at any time with reasonable notice.
  • Some payouts may be rounded to the nearest $1 or $0.50 for simplicity.

4. Jars, PayPages, PayLinks, and PayCodes

You may create one or more “Jars” to collect funds. Each Jar may include features such as:

  • Open donation PayLinks
  • Fixed-amount options
  • Menu-style lists
  • QR codes
  • Bank transfer details
  • Public/Private visibility settings
  • Custom branding and logos

It is your responsibility to:

  • Ensure all content in your Jar is accurate.
  • Use logos or images that you have rights to use.
  • Configure visibility and payment settings correctly.
  • Comply with NZ laws for fundraising, sales, or donations.

TipJar may remove or disable any Jar that violates these Terms.

5. Payouts

Payouts are handled by Stripe and sent to the bank account you provide.

Payout timing, holds, disputes, and verifications follow Stripe’s rules. TipJar is not responsible for delays caused by Stripe, your bank, or incorrect account information.

If a payment is refunded, disputed, or reversed, the corresponding amount will be deducted from your future payouts.

6. Demo Jars and Templates

You may use Demo Jars or Templates provided by TipJar. Demo Jars show the full experience with payments disabled.

Templates can be cloned and customised. You are fully responsible for any Jar created from a template.

7. Acceptable Use

You agree not to use TipJar for:

  • Fraud
  • Money laundering
  • Illegal activities
  • Misleading fundraising
  • Selling prohibited products or services
  • High-risk transactions defined by Stripe
  • Offensive, hateful, or harmful content

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these rules.

8. Refunds

Refunds for online payments are handled through Stripe. If your supporters request a refund, you must arrange it directly with them.

TipJar cannot issue refunds on your behalf.

9. Accuracy of Information

You must keep your account details, contact information, and payout bank account accurate and up to date.

10. Termination

We may suspend or close your account if:

  • You violate these Terms.
  • You fail KYC verification.
  • Your activity is deemed high-risk.
  • Required by law or by Stripe.

You may close your account at any time. Closing your account does not cancel pending payouts, disputes, or charges.

11. Intellectual Property

TipJar.nz, including its branding, design, logos, software, and content, is owned by TipJar (Xaver Solutions).

You may not copy, resell, or reverse-engineer any part of the platform.

12. Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by New Zealand law:

  • TipJar provides the service “as is”.
  • We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation.
  • We are not liable for lost revenue, lost donations, or indirect damages.
  • You are solely responsible for how you use the platform.

Nothing in these Terms limits your rights under New Zealand consumer law where applicable.

13. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold TipJar harmless from claims arising from:

  • Your Jars or fundraising activities.
  • Your content or branding.
  • Your misuse of the platform.
  • Any breach of these Terms.

14. Privacy

Your use of TipJar is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which explains how data is collected and handled.

15. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms at any time. Updates will be posted on the website with a new revision date.

Continued use of TipJar after changes means you accept the updated Terms.

16. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand. Any disputes will be resolved under New Zealand jurisdiction.
